Throughout the following steps leave the VirtualBox Linux guest machine running. At first I was racking my brain thinking that I had failed to unmount the encrypted file container before copying it to the USB, but no, I did everything correctly.Īfter some time I arrived at the following test which proved to me what was happening. What was different about Friday Feb 16, 2018? I had left the VirtualBox Linux guest machine at work running since the previous day. This seemed to resolve the issue until Friday Feb 16, 2018. I devised elaborate ways to ensure I copied the file in the correct direction and that I had renamed backups with the date appended to the files name so that I was never overwriting the existing file. I started to think that I was losing my mind thinking that I had failed to copy the file in the correct direction to or from the external USB key. I was careful to always unmount the encrypted file container before transferring it to an external USB key and before transferring it back to a hard disk on the host either at home or at work. I became aware that there was a problem when I would see that changes that I had made, either at home or at work, were not showing up once I had transferred the encrypted file container to the other location. The encrypted file container was formatted as ext3 so I wasn't able to access it from my Windows host at home. Typically I would never access the encrypted file container from the host either at home or at work but always from a VirtualBox Linux guest machine. The complication was that I was accessing this encrypted file container, which was stored in a directory on a Linux/Windows host, through the Shared Folder option from a VirtualBox Linux guest machine. This sounds like a great plan in principle. This way I could copy the encrypted file container between home and work and always have the latest version of the Keepnote notebook. I had devised a plan to store the Keepnote notebook in a Veracrypt encrypted file container. I discovered the issue after a long time of struggling with intermittent corruption in a Keepnote notebook.
